Andrew Blaha
"No matter what situation I emphasize the importance of respect"Hi! I’m Andrew Blaha. I am currently in my senior year at the College of Charleston studying business with a concentration in leadership and a minor in physical education. I grew up in Saratoga Springs where I was involved in a variety of academic and athletic organizations. Most prominently the Varsity tennis team which was a huge part of my high school experience. I took that passion to college where I am the president for the Charleston club tennis team and intern for the athletic department. I look forward to the next stage of life where I hope to pursue a career in athletics management.
How did you meet Coach Rich Johns?
Funnily enough, I first heard of coach Johns when he came to speak to our middle school band program. I didn’t know then, but I would get to know him much better later in life. I got to know him as a sophomore in high school as he was a consistent supporter and occasionally an on-court doubles coach for Saratoga Tennis. His calm voice and leadership were a big part of our success as a team during my four years. Now I view him as a friend, coach, role model and mentor as I move towards a career in athletics and coaching.
How did you hear about Act With Respect Always?
I heard about Act With Respect Always through many of the signs and banners I would see around down and in the hallways of Saratoga Schools. In particular, the signs around East Side Rec Park were very vibrant as I grew up playing youth sports on the fields and courts there. Like I mentioned, Coach Johns also came and spoke to a few of my classes in middle school to bring awareness and attention to his message.
How has the Act With Respect Always mission affected you personally?
Act With Respect Always has made a significant mark on my journey as a young adult in the classroom, on the court and in relationship building. I frequently preach the message of respect to my team and the words respect and integrity are at the foundation of my coaching philosophy. It is also a great reminder in my personal life to treat others with respect even at difficult moments. And of course, I always rock the merch from Coach Johns as a good reminder.
Please share with us how you have, or will in the future “Pay it Forward”
The phrase “Pay it Forward” is one I try to regularly put to affect in my day-to-day life. I Currently pay it forward through my volunteer positions in tennis coaching and peer mentorship. I spend many hours working with and teaching less experienced players for our club team and I also work with current college freshmen, helping them with everything from schoolwork to social life advice. No matter what situation I am in I try to emphasize the importance of respect both for yourself and others.
How would you describe the Act With Respect Always mission to others?
The Act With Respect Always mission is one that can teach us the values of respect, paying it forward, leadership, character development and more. I think we often forget about these values as the world moves fast around us. This message reminds us to be respectful and put your best foot forward regardless of the situation. It’s a crucial message for all students, athletes, and people in the workforce to hear.
Would you recommend Rich to speak about Respect to others?
I would absolutely recommend Rich Johns to speak to others about Respect. The messaging is great, but you don’t truly understand the deeper meaning until you hear the passion Coach Johns speaks with on this topic. It has certainly made an impact on me, and I would strongly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to hear him speak to take it.
