How did you meet Coach Rich Johns?
I was privileged enough to have Coach Johns as my social studies teacher in sixth grade. He is still today one of my favorite teachers. As a student, I was treated with the same amount of respect as anybody else, which led to a very fun and constructive learning environment.
How did you hear about Act With Respect Always?
Coach Johns started the program when I was a student of his in sixth grade. At the time, the official movement was just beginning and I’d like to say part of it started in our class. We then began to spread the message around the school and eventually the community. It was an honor to be a small part of the mission from the start.
How has the Act With Respect Alway mission effected you personally?
Act With Respect Always has had a very deep effect on me. Many of us are taught about respect when we are growing up, but it is very easy to lose that message when at an environment like school. Coach Johns taught us the full meaning of respect and the positives that come along with it. The mission has now spread further than I ever thought it would when it first started, and I am extremely happy it has. The “Act With Respect Always” mission is a very effective way to remind people of the importance of respect.
Please share with us how you have, or will in the future “Pay it Forward”
I would like to think that I “Pay It Forward” in every part of my daily life, including athletics. It is very important to have respect at all times in any sport. Respect leads to less injuries and a much more enjoyable game. As a captain, playing and acting with respect allows me to be a positive example for my teammates. Also, when teammates, coaches, and opponents all have respect for one another, everyone benefits much more as a person and an athlete. In the future, I hope to “Pay It Forward” in a similar manner to Coach Johns. I plan to pursue a degree in education and will definitely continue to spread the mission wherever I end up.
How would you describe the Act With Respect Always mission to others?
I would describe the Act With Respect Always mission as a program that helps remind people of all ages the importance and effect of respect. It expands the word “respect” into a way of life that everyone should live.
Would you recommend Rich to speak about Respect to others?
I would definitely recommend Coach Johns to speak to others. I still remember the things I was taught and apply them every day. The effect is extremely positive and lasts a lifetime. Everyone, at all ages, would benefit from hearing this message.
